Best practices & hiring tips

Knowledgebase

Hiring a plumber shouldn’t feel like rolling dice. Use these practices before, during, and after the job — so you don’t get rinsed.

Non-negotiable rule

Always use PlumbingProtect especially when using sites like Airtasker, MyBuilder, etc. These platforms can include excellent trades — but they also make it easy for cowboys to disappear. Your audit trail is your leverage.

1 Before you hire

  • Check reviews properly. Look for patterns: punctuality, cleanliness, callbacks, hidden costs.
  • Get a written quote. Include parts, labour, callout, and what counts as “extra”.
  • Ask simple questions. “What’s your plan?” “What could go wrong?” “What evidence will you provide?”
  • Verify competence. For gas work: only Gas Safe. For complex jobs: ask for examples of similar work.

2 During the job

  • Take photos: before, mid-work (especially hidden areas), and after.
  • Keep comms in writing. If they call you, confirm by message: “Just confirming you said…”
  • Scope changes must be agreed. No surprise add-ons. Get confirmation before extra work.
  • Materials matter. Keep packaging or note brands/specs where possible.

3 After completion

  • Test everything. Run water, check pressure, watch for leaks, confirm flow/temperature.
  • Pay by card, never cash. Card payments create proof. Cash makes you vulnerable.
  • Pay only after the job is done and tested. Deposits should be reasonable and documented.
  • Store everything. Quotes, invoices, photos, messages, and the report pack in one folder.

Extra things people forget (and regret)

Evidence beats opinions

If a dispute happens, nobody cares about vibes. They care about documented scope, timestamps, and proof of what was done.

Watch for upselling

If they suddenly “discover” ten new problems, pause. Ask for evidence, clear explanation, and get second opinions for major costs.

Isolations & access

Know where your stopcock is. If a job requires isolating water/heat, confirm it’s done safely and documented.

Agree warranties/callbacks

Ask what happens if it fails in 7 days. Get it in writing. “No callbacks” is usually a red flag unless the job is tiny.
